Mandated Health Screenings
School nurses perform the following Massachusetts mandated health screenings, unless written documentation is provided by the student’s primary care provider (M.G.L.c71, s57).
Vision Screenings: Vision screenings are performed yearly on all students, per state regulations. Also, a student may be tested at any time during the year if the nurse, parent/guardian or a teacher has concerns.
Growth & Development: Heights, Weights, and Body Mass Indexes (BMIs), per state regulations, are complete on every student grades 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th. Results are sent home to parents/guardians. To read more about BMI screenings, click here.
Hearing Screenings: Hearing screenings are performed yearly on all students, per state regulations, in grades kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 10th. Also, a student may be tested at any time or grade if the nurse, parent/guardian or teacher has concerns.
Postural/Scoliosis Screenings: The Stoneham Public Schools will administer State required screening tests for scoliosis during the months of January and February. Students in grades five through nine will be tested in physical education classes. If a spinal problem is suspected, the child will be rechecked at a second screening. If further consultation is recommended, parents or guardians of these students will be notified. To learn more about Postural Screening, click here.
Parents/guardians will be notified and a physician referral will be sent home if any health concerns are identified during any of these screenings. Completed referrals should be returned as soon as possible.
