PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

August 3, 2022

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

I hope that you have had a wonderful Summer and that this message finds you well rested and excited for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year.  We have been busy planning for your return and are excited and look forward to welcoming you back for a year of learning, growth and personal success.

This letter is meant to provide information to allow for a positive transition to the start of the school year.  Enclosed you will find information regarding student academic schedules, the school day academic schedule and academic calendar, Student-Parent Handbook, class meetings, Chromebook pick up, upcoming save the date activities and new faces at SHS.

We are eager to welcome back our returning students and the incoming Class of 2026. The past two years have certainly been impactful for all of us in the Stoneham High School community and the next two years, though not as disruptive and certainly not as scary as the pandemic, will certainly be impactful in its own way with the building of our new high school in full swing.  Either way, we have shown as a student body, as a faculty and as a community that we have the academic and social skills, the growth mindset, positive attitude, kindness and community spirit to face and successfully overcome challenges and adversity.

It is certainly a relief to start the school year without COVID being the main topic of planning and worry.  However, realistically we need to accept that aspects of COVID are still with us and will continue with infections and quarantines and the subsequent impacts on work and school.  Though masks and other safety guidelines are no longer mandated, we still must be cognizant, flexible and supportive of members of our community who may be impacted by COVID or for those who will continue with wearing masks.

Though we have seen much student and overall school success these past two years there is a strong common feeling that the constant focus, attention and impact of COVID has minimized consistent and important messaging for our students with regard to student academic, behavioral and overall expectations for high school age students.  This year we seek to re-establish norms, routines and expectations which promote student academic success and build upon our positive and inclusive learning environment.

As stated above we are excited and eager for your return and look forward to working with all of our students for their optimal learning, growth and success. There are many academic and extracurricular opportunities and support for our students. Your learning, growth, steps to your dreams and future await; it only requires your active participation.  Here’s to a fun, positive, rigorous, creative and engaging school year.

In addition, we are holding a Meet the Administration on Wednesday, August 24, from 6:00 - 7:00 PM in the SHS Auditorium. This is an optional meeting with an informal Q and A format for parents.

“Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.”

▪A course was made up in summer school

If you notice any of the above schedule issues please contact your School Counselor as soon as possible to schedule a meeting.  School Counselors will be available the week of August 22nd.

Student Parking

The new high school building project has resulted in the loss of our former student parking lot and the making of a temporary parking lot.  At this time the temporary parking lot is not yet complete and lined with spaces. This new temporary parking lot and our existing front parking lot are the only two areas for the parking of all SHS faculty, student parking and visitors. Upon an accurate counting of available parking spaces in the temporary and existing front parking lots combined with specific identification of spaces required for handicap access, visitors and all SHS faculty we will know exactly how many spaces will be available for student parking. Once we have determined how many available spaces we have for students we will communicate the availability for student parking.  Our hope is that we will be able to accommodate all student drivers.  If our spaces appear to be limited we will then utilize a process with priority to Seniors followed by Junior student drivers.  We will communicate an update with details the week of August 15.

FLEX Block

FLEX block provides students opportunities for academic support and enrichment activities and common planning time for teachers. Students should regularly and actively utilize FLEX to support their learning and academic success.  Students should regularly seek out and schedule time with their teachers for any needed academic support.

·  FLEX block is scheduled for the last period of each day in our two-day academic schedule.  For the first three weeks of school, students will be reporting to their assigned FLEX advisor for each FLEX.

·   Students will receive further details about FLEX Block at their orientation as well as the first day of school.

·  Please note that, unless otherwise communicated, every Friday there is an early release with student dismissal at 2:16pm.
