Welcome Back to School-8/31/22

PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

Greetings,

I hope that you enjoyed our final weekend before we start the 2022-2023 school year this Wednesday, August 31.  Here is some information to help with the start of the new year as well as for our new traffic and parking plans.

Best,

Mr. Lombardi

Student Schedule Changes

Unfortunately, the staffing and hiring woes that we have heard about in other business sectors has impacted us in Stoneham Public Schools and specifically here at SHS.  Last week we received word of two unexpected faculty resignations.  We have been working diligently to move forward with an expedited hiring process and to reschedule and reassign teacher assignments with minimum disruption as possible to cover our needs.  To do this we have been forced to alter some schedules which have impacted some students schedules with regard to assigned classroom teachers or Special Education Liaison.

All students should check their schedules on PowerSchool prior to Wednesday, 8/31, to view for any possible schedule changes.

Opening day messages to students

Here are the key themes we addressed with students during Class Orientations, we would appreciate your help in supporting and discussing these with your students:

·  Help us create an inclusive,  safe, positive and healthy school environment for ALL students

o Acceptance and respect of each other and our unique differences

o Kindness; Being kind with one another

·  Responsible and mature with behavior in hallways and bathrooms

o Hallways:  Positive and appropriate language and interactions

o Bathrooms:  Keep clean, for bathroom use only, not a hangout

·  School and Class Attendance

o Good and consistent daily attendance is the best indicator for student success

·  Cell Phones / Earbuds & headphones

o Cellphones and earbuds / headphones are to be turned off and put away out of sight during all scheduled classes.

§ There are no permitted or allowed person’s or reasons that allows for a student to take out their phone to read or respond to a text or phone call.

§ Student’s may use their cellphone to support an educational activity only with the explicit permission of their classroom teacher.

o    Students may use Cellphones and earbuds / headphones during transitions between classes and during lunch.

·  FLEX Block

o Use consistently, frequently and in a meaningful manner to support their academic success.

·  Construction Site

o At all times we are an active construction site.

§  Please walk and drive with extra precaution

§ Follow all posted directionals and signage.

Driving Routes and Maps

Please plan your  morning routine accordingly so that you are in your first period class on time; 8:15AM.  As we transition into a new school year with new traffic patterns and parking configurations I remind everyone in our school community that it is expected that we all follow the new traffic routes, student drop off / pick up area and parking designations.  There are no shortcuts to be had, please follow the parking areas and signs as posted.

Student Parking Update

Senior only student parking for Wednesday, 8/31 and Thursday, 9/1

After determining faculty parking assignments we were left with one hundred and sixty six spaces (166).  Of these spaces, Seniors have requested one hundred and fourteen (114) spaces.  This leaves a total of fifty two (52) spaces.  We have sixity requests from Junior and underclassman students.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to fulfill all Junior and underclassman requests.  The fairest system we feel is to first honor requests for those students who are first eligible to drive a car.

We will begin to open up and assign parking spaces for eligible student drivers in the Junior Class starting the week of September 5.  We will start with those Juniors and Sophomores who are eligible to drive starting in August / September.  We will open up further parking applications on a month by month basis until all spaces are assigned.  Posting of parking applications will occur in the last week of the month preceding the next monthly application window.

The Grade 10 and 11 Parking Application Form, for those with current valid driver's license for August / September, can be found HERE
