Principal's Message 5/2/21

Welcome May!

Welcome May!

PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

Hello,

Odd to be entering our final full month of school as we welcome back our entire student body for the first time of the school year.  It certainly adds to an already exciting time of year. We are looking forward to our school community coming together to complete the year as one and with success for all students.  Tomorrow we will start with a Day 1 schedule.

Tomorrow our students will enter Stoneham High School with our Blue Carpet Welcome!  Students and households should plan morning routines accordingly as there will be a significant increase in car and foot traffic and congestion and delays may occur. Drivers are reminded to drive with caution and awareness.

As students return to school we remind them of the expectation of and importance of adhering to our COVID safety requirements and guidelines of properly wearing a face mask at all times upon entering the SHS campus, frequently washing and sanitizing hands and social distancing. Students have been doing a stellar job with wearing masks and should extend the same focus with walking in the hallways and stairwells and following the established traffic routes.

All academic hallways and stairwells are one way with only the Main Lobby and Cafeteria Hallway being both directions.  If at any time, you are walking in the academic hallways or stairwells, and are facing another person, you are going the wrong way. Please turn around and simply go with the flow. Thank you!

Though, our last full month of school, there is still much work to complete. Students, please continue to engage with teachers and counselors for support as needed and to effectively utilize the afternoon extended sessions for your academic success.

Here’s to a great first week back together.

Stress-Less Day

On Thursday, May 13th, Stoneham High School will be participating in Spartan "Stress-Less" Day. This event was proposed by students in the 2020-2021 Civic Action class with the goal of promoting mental and physical health as well as providing students with an opportunity to learn and engage in our community without the stressors of grades or long-term academic commitment.

Together, Peer Leader and Civic Action students have dedicated hours to planning and organizing so this event could take place before the Class of 2021's last day of school. While the hard work of these students would be applauded during a normal year, it is especially noteworthy during this 2020-2021 school year of change and uncertainty.

On this day, SHS students will be able to choose from a collection of "stress-less" activities led by faculty and student leaders. These sessions will emphasize the importance of learning for fun, building community, and prioritizing overall health and wellbeing. Students can select from activities such as walking, jogging, baking bread, learning to play tennis, making sensory bottles, coloring, learning about hip hop, scrapbooking, or playing a friendly trivia game, to name a few. Additionally, all ninth graders will attend one session with their school counselor to learn more about what the school counseling department does.  Through this opportunity, students will begin to develop a relationship with their counselor as well as become more familiar with the many resources we have to offer at Stoneham High School.

Our community will continue to adhere to Covid safety regulations throughout this event. Despite these restrictions, we hope this day allows us to come together and offer community support in a year particularly inhibited by isolation and distance.

Together, our community will unwind, "stress-less," and appreciate the many supports we have within our school. Thank you for your continued support!

This is a full school day with start time of 8:15 and dismissal at 12:30; School attendance is required.
