Dear Parents,

I would like to congratulate our Star Students for the month of January:   Sean Powers, Olugbolade Asupoto, Emily Mota, Brooke Abbott, Maira Saleem, Christopher Ellis, and Ella Max

Star Students are nominated by any staff member who recognizes a student performing an act of kindness toward another student or staff member.

Winter Concert

On the night of Thursday, January 17, the Middle School vocal and instrumental ensembles performed at their Winter Concert.  The Chorus sang first, under the direction of Mr. David Parry, performing a program of Disney songs, covering Disney history from Snow White to Moana.  The Flute Ensemble, under the direction of Ms. Stephanie Sousa, performed four pieces, including When The Saints Go Marching In.  The After Hours Jazz Band offered three pieces by Dean Sorenson, finishing with Milo On Midway.  The Concert Band then played five selections, including the theme from The Surprise Symphony by Haydn and the feel-good Banana Boat Song.  Both bands were directed by Mr. Len Simboski.  The children worked hard for their performances, and they were supported by an enthusiastic audience.  Let's hear it for the kids involved in the Middle School music program!

Math Team

Congratulations to the Math Team, which placed fifth at its meet in Lynnfield! Leading the scoring were Jessica Hom, Maya Ibrahim, Quinn Nial, Konstantina Hantzis, and Radhika Patel followed closely by Wilmarika Annacacis, Nihal Berrad, Bree Lakeman, Alex Dubuisson, Shenaya Verma and Ivy Wong.

Konstantina Hantzis and Radhika Patel also received awards as highest scoring 5th graders at the meet. Congratulations to all participants!

ROBOTICS CLUB

Robotics Club completed their first Robotics Competition with four successful robots earning points at the VEX Robotics Competition at North Andover High School this past Saturday.

Spanish News

8th-grade Spanish students just finished a week-long project in coordination with our new Technology Coach, Mr. Serino.  With an abundance of help and instruction from Mr. Serino students completed green screen projects using WeVideo in which they wrote, directed, performed, and then edited dialogues that used their current health and wellness vocabulary.  They incorporated cultural context by using images of beaches from the Dominican Republic.  Students had a lot of fun and we all (Mrs. Clark included) learned a lot the last week.  Thank you, Mr. Serino!

GRADE EIGHT PARENT INFORMATION

Parents and guardians of current eighth graders are invited to attend an orientation meeting about scheduling on Tuesday, February 52019, at 7:00 pm in the Stoneham High School Cafeteria. A student panel, administrators and guidance counselors will provide an overview of the scheduling process and answer questions. Grade 8 students do not need to attend the meeting. Questions may be directed to Mrs. Cargill at Stoneham High School, 781-279-3810.

GRADE SIX NEWS

The 6th-grade students recently finished a pilot program during Activity Period.  Students were able to choose from a variety of teacher driven activities such as, board games, coding, crafts, yoga, creative writing, calisthenics and more!  For students who preferred a quiet work environment, there was also a homework lab.  Everyone had a great time learning something new and socializing with teachers in a different manner.  With the start of the 3rd quarter, 6th-grade students were able to choose a new activity.
